Nude Models On Strike

Why isn't the Nude Model's strike getting more play? I am very concerned about this. I hope Italy can get this resolved in a timely manner.

This pair of shirts is pretty adorable in the geekiest way imaginable. It's much better than this one my old roommate Rick bought. I am in much more of a situation to buy these. And these Adult Madlibs just sound enjoyable, as all Madlibs are. I never imagined there was a need for adult Madlibs because you could just use more sophisticated words, although I haven't played Madlibs since age 10 in Ms. Russo's class, so maybe I'm wrong...

Dreams and Music

I had weird dreams last night; there was a radio playing for the duration. I had one dream about about a camp for polydactyls, and one participant had 1 finger and 4 thumbs. That was odd, since that isn't polydactylism. All of them were like that to some degree. Perhaps there is a new radio commercial about people needing specific digits to eat a pizza or something. I wouldn't know, because I was asleep. I suppose these sorts of dreams are slightly more desirable than those I had yesterday morning where I dreamt I had gotten out of bed and into the shower, only to awaken a half hour later still in bed.

Anyways, this morning I woke up to this song, which is a nice song. I enjoy it as much as I enjoy anything they play. I'm not usually one for popular music, but I'm not prejudiced against it. I like to imagine the song contains some grain of truth and the pearl is built upon some experience where she actually was asked to write someone a love song, perhaps a boyfriend or just a music executive, and refused.

But she still wrote the song! It just contains the stipulation that it is not a "love song," aside from the title. I don't know, but if I was that dude and got a top 40 song written to/about me, I'd still be pretty happy, even if it wasn't a love song. Especially if I had asked.

Teeth Stains

A very unflattering picture of my teeth stained by the methylene blue. The stains last longer on skin than teeth, which is fortunate. I don't know if I'll be able to get a decent picture of my sclera. Methylene blue tastes pretty disgusting. This will be my last trial for a time...probably...

It's Hard to Overstate My Satisfaction

This photo was taken approximately 23 hours after ingestion. There is still some color left, but it appears to filter through almost completely within a twenty-four hour period. I have noticed no ill effects.

But it looks like I may have stained the toilet.

Disregard how messy the bathroom is for a moment and realize how awesome this is. I ingested 1 tsp of methylene blue with two 12 oz cans of Mountain Dew and waited a few hours and BAM! So far, I've noticed no discoloration of the sclera.

This one, with the bad-ass name Nepenthes tenax, grows to be a full meter tall and can digest small rodents. I love me some carnivorous plants. My little sister has had a few pet Venus flytraps; she managed to kill them all through overfeeding them, although they are quite fickle to begin with.

The Lobotomist

Thank you, Public Broadcasting.

I just watched an hour-long documentary about the inventor and greatest proponent of lobotomy as a surgical procedure. It don't think it was intended to be disturbing, but given the subject matter, could not escape it. My immediate response to anything unnerving is, of course, to write about it on the internets. You can watch the entire episode, nay, the experience online (nevermind, they don't have The Lobotomist up yet, although they do have that episode about The Mormons that got everyone in a tizzy). It was undeniably interesting; they had an actual lobotomy ~~survivor~~ patient interviewed. Given that the procedure was largely discontinued by the start of the 70's and he's still around... he was only 12 years old at the time! His story was covered by NPR's All Things Considered back in 2005 (you can see it here).

Also, they go in through the eye and make a windshield wiper like motion to sever the nerves (see below)

Today is the most depressing day of the year? But I'm enjoying the holiday!
I heard first on Morning Edition, and then later in a report by Tim Riley, that today is the Gloomiest Day of the Year. They call it 'Blue Monday,' which is a pretty awesome title. There's some research to back it up from a leading psychologist. You can do the leg work if you're interested. I really just wanted to find this soundbite of advice Mr. Riley shared from said psychologist:

"Focus on the good things you do have in your life. If one of your limbs does not work, focus on the three that do."

Tingly Feeling: Post Counts!

I've generated more posts this month than I did in the entire year of 2006. My blogging style has departed dramatically from these times. This can largely be explained by the format change I introduced early in the month and my use of ScribeFire. No longer are the days when I had to login to Blogger manually and use their (rather poor) applet to update posts. I also had more posts in 2005 than 2006, although I've nearly reached this amount this month as well, and this blog had multiple contributors for parts of 2005. And there's still another 10 days left!

This realization makes me feel strange. Tingly, perhaps? That sounds just sensual enough.

Movie about vagina dentata

There's a movie at Sundance right now about the vagina dentata myth, an idea which creeps me out on a very base level, like the lotus seeds. It's called Teeth which is a great title. The website is also great, because it makes me incredibly squeamish, but I am in general a very squeamish person. The whistling only makes it worse.

Valentine's Day

I have a pair of Heelys. I am horrible on them. I think it it is because I never had anyone help me as advised in the training video. In any case, they make some very tedious tasks very, very fun. Shopping is one such example. I use the cart like a pair of training wheels and zoom around like I'm 7 (my brother's age who can use his Heelys aptly). Anyways, I saw this gruesome display when I was stocking up on Dew. I wouldn't say that I'm glad to be single, but I am relieved that I won't be obligated into any such purchases.

Book Recommendation

I just pulled down my copy of How To Be A Superhero(see below) to scan in a picture of the hysterical tiger pose, a mainstay of superhero posture, when I was struck by how well done this book is. I've read several books of this variety (or is it a genre?) and this is probably the best I've read. I noticed at least a few new entries to the field when I was at a bookstore last month, and I can't say this is better without having read them, but it's marked down on Amazon and might be worth a look. The fashion tips alone are priceless. I even highlighted things as I went along, until I realized, who was I kidding? I don't spend nearly enough time at toxic chemical dumps.

The greatest problem I see with making a decent Flash movie is, which one? There are four Flashes. Secondly, who does he fight? Flash has doesn't have the rogues gallery that other heroes have. He has a super-genius gorilla he fights, but really? Maybe Mirror Master.

I'm totally gay for The Office. I haven't seen the new GAP advertising campaign featuring John Krasinski, but when I saw there was a facebook group for it, I couldn't resist joining it. I am now a member of the group I walked past The Gap just to see the picture of John Krasinski. I need to reaffirm my masculinity in someway now.

Nerd Moment

I had a huge nerd moment this morning. I often (see: always) sleep through my first alarm, which is set to NPR. News softly diffuses into my dreams and I'm followed by an acute sensation of deja vu the rest of day. Occasionally I'll wake up, listen to a story and drift back to sleep. I had a particularly weird experience this morning. I can't remember what the story was, but it was discussing Obama, I think. I suppose it doesn't really matter, because it doesn't have an relevance to my little story, but they mentioned Jon Stewart and the nerd in my immediately thought of John Stewart, a Green Lantern. I just saw a commercial for this. I was intrigued and since my laptop is here, heating my genitals, I decided to check it out. I've never been to anything like this, and it looks like fun, although that would be somewhat dependant on the food. If I knew someone interested in going, I'd look into it more, but since I haven't found anyone to go see Walking with Dinosaurs (live!), it's unlikely. However, I will share this find with you, the Internets.

Blade Runner will not run

Wired Magazine just did a piece on Oscar Pistorius. It's unfortunate timing, really. He was just declared ineligible for competition in the Bejing Olympics. He's already a paralympic champion and was looking to be the first to crossover. The wording they used in the declaration seems...loaded:

"any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other
element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not
using such a device"

I'm not an expert, but it looks like that could be construed to exclude anyone with an artificial limb, or whatever, from competing if it gives them an advantage over any other competitor, even if the other person sucks.

At least he has a cool nickname: Blade Runner.

Geography of the Internet

This is an old xkcd strip. I disagree with some parts of it, although it is incredibly clever. I'm only mentioning it because it was used as an example (of a map!) in my Human Geography class. I asked the professor if he read the comic regularly, making sure to pronounce "X-K-C-D" clearly and methodically, with special attention paid to the order of the consonants. A particularly nerdy girl, as I have gathered based on a shirt that described bears as The Enemy and overhearing a reference to Snakes of a Plane, seemed to sequel as she heard my mention. But He said no. He said that he had, however, met the author or PBF, which is perhaps more exciting. Apparently, the man is deranged (surprise!). Excellent!

Hairless dogs

I just watched a show on PBS, Dogs That Changed the World. It was kind of neat, but one thing really stood out: The Xoloitzcuintli. It's an ancient breed of dog that they Aztecs used in ritual sacrifices and whatnot. It looks... it looks like Satan's pet.

Nixon's Enemies

I was watching Pioneers of Television on OPB and they mentioned that one of these pioneer talk show hosts made it to Nixon's enemies list. I wondered, who else was on that list? I'd heard that Bill Cosby was on it, but was he? Wikipedia seems to have the answers!

Post Mortem Photography

Someone sent me this link, supposedly because I'd enjoy it, or something. I find the concept fascinating: propping up still-borns, bending corpses before rigor mortis sets in for one last keepsake. It's no longer common practice, at least I don't imagine it is, making the photos that much more haunting imagining the circumstances that dictated the photographs. Of course post-mortem pictures are still taken, one of Anna Nicole Smith circulates the web, but for an entirely different purpose, the reason viewed the same as the one for which this flickr pool exists. On the brighter side, at least there was no difficulty getting the subjects to remain still for exposure time. Honestly, I couldn't finish the set, I stopped after this one, recoiling back, Dear God!

I apologize for the rambling nature of this post. I've got a bad case of the jibblies now.

Years ago, there was a commercial. It was a really good commercial. You probably remember it.

She sorta looks like this girl I had a crush on in middle school.

I exercised a little search-fu, quickly learning her name was misspelled on that Youtube video and that she was in an French short film called Bed and Breakfast. She's approximately the same age as me, and thus likely to be socially networked. It probably wouldn't be to difficult to find her actual dox, but I always find the fake stuff so much more interesting. Her top friends include Carl Winslow and Mr Skin. There were several fakies, as there often are with (in)famous individuals (I have Gob from Arrested Development on mine) like Stephen Colbert, but this was the most substantial of the lot:

I've been a big fan of Lore Sjoberg since his ratings back at The Brunching Shuttlecocks. The site is sadly abandoned, but not derelict, although I can't say with any certainty how maintained his blog or other projects continued. I imagine the ratings stopped shortly after his book was published. In any case, he is now a contributor to Wired. His latest piece is wonderful:

Methylene Blue is an amazing chemical. From my crude understanding, it's a dye with mild anti-fungal properties that make it useful for aquaculture. If ingested, in small amounts, can turn someone's urine blue. It is available for purchase on Amazon in case your fishes get a case of the ich. Update: I've purchased 4oz of methylene blue after mistakenly ordering 1oz of methylene green. What a mix up that was! Stay posted.

Game Show .wav sounds

Back in the day I used to watch a lot of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? When was that show on? I was in like 7th grade, so like, 1999 or 2000? Long time ago. I think it's still on as a daytime game show. Lately I've been really getting into Jeopardy as the penultimate intellectual smack-down available on television. Not that Who Wants to be a Millionaire was ever that intellectually demanding, certainly not the same way Jeopardy is, but it had an element of suspense that I loved. I really think it was that mustache Alex had which really prevented me from enjoying Jeopardy before. Also, that I only recently realized I knew enough to hold my own watching the show.

Anyways, I found a teacher's website where he had created PowerPoint presentations as a teaching tool based off these two game shows. What really interested me were the sound clips included that would make for, I think, a pretty fun ringtone, if you were so inclined.

Tom loves Craigslist

Tom Leykis (whose wikipedia entry has recently been butchered) loves talking about Craigslist and Myspace and how they are used to facilitate sexual encounters. Tom Leykis is reading this on air right now. It's pretty funny. I'm glad I didn't turn the radio off right away like usual. His monologues are always the best part of his show, aside from the occasional listener smack-down, although that was what turned me off his show to begin with. I began to notice how he'd start talking over people when they disagreed with him, and suddenly he was not-so-different from Bill O'Reilly and the experience was ruined. Most all of his callers agree with him (and then continue to testify on how often he is right and how listening has changed their life), so after the first ten minutes, you've heard the remaining 50 before the next monologue. Most of the things he talks about are true, to those to whom such truths apply, or I must assume so as I have no contradictory evidence to disprove or refute his claims and he seems credible. Even so, I imagine there's some self-filtering of opposing arguments, because the next 5 callers will probably rail against you after you've been talked over by Tom, and who wants that? Thus it seems that the only opposition he receives are from new listeners who aren't familiar with all of his stances (he speaks in broad terms and never says always) and outraged women. Although I don't listen to him often anymore or agree with some of his positions, or follow the lifestyle he advocates, he is a very successful broadcaster and I suggest anyone who hasn't heard him, or heard of him, to check him out. It's hard to compare him to any other broadcaster, so far as my knowledge permits, although comparisons could be made to a secular televangelism program with it's proclamations of truth and life changing testimonials. Here in Portland he is on AM 970 from 3pm-7pm.
