My parents are dead!

I'm experiencing a blend of accomplishment and shame. It took me quite a while, but I managed to size down an ascii Batman to fit in that trite little box Facebook put under profile pictures. Behold:

(`I'M_THE_`)oo.ooo.oooooooo
(`GODDAMN`)ol\__\ooooooo

I wish I could say it looks better on Facebook, but it doesn't really. One of many recent complaints with Facebook. Foremost of them: why is there a like button but no dislike button? I want to disprove of my friends actions through the electronic ether. Seperated by space, but not from condescension!

Ten Days to Singles Awareness Day

I'd be more tempted to see this if I hadn't been so let down by Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter

I dugg this a while ago, and apparently it happened in Texas. The maintenance worker quoted seemed more concerned about the traffic risks than the false zombie alarm. Clearly, they have their priorities mixed up. Also based on my experience in public works, I don't believe they really locked up the sign.

Game Over

I'd just like to point out that one of the fifth place contender(s) in that American Apparel costume contest I mentioned before was a series of Tetris blocks. Though I didn't include any of their products in my costume and was thus ineligible (I didn't have time to buy tights), think my costume is superior since it lacks the goofy looking face windows that totally detract realism. My actual only complaint, besides the inherent loneliness of being the only block, is how hot the costume got, which was a very nice considering the weather. Fortunately it didn't rain, though I'm confident it would have held up pretty well. I was happy with it. If I can find appropriete boxes and approprietely sized friends, I might try to make more. I got the boxes for free from Target, Party City, and a few others (most places have a surplus that just get recycled although it took a while to find matching sizes). Overall, it ended up costing less than twenty five dollars with the primary expense being the three rolls of white duct tape I went through. I posted pictures on my mobile blog as I went. Drunk pedestrians really enjoyed the costume. Many wanted to talk about it, or at least confirm that I was, in fact, the greatest video game character evar, which was difficult for me as I wanted to stay in character. The L-Block doesn't speak, though I would occasionally awkwardly pantomime with my torso and legs. The strangest adjulations proclaimed their hatred of rubix cubes.

Still no word from the league btw

This was my Halloween costume. It's not as original as everyone thought.

I missed it. Actually, I didn't know Portland had one. Ugh. I can't say I would have tried to attend had I known. I know I don't want to miss Zompire this spring. I'm also a little disappointed that I can't make it to Live Wire! this weekend. I'd love to see John Hodgman and Jonathon Coulton.

Virtually Connected

I keep a mobile blog. I've thought of just using Twitter, but then I remember that no one cares about the minutiae of my life, including myself. So I'm content to post inane things for my own gratification happy to know no one but myself will ever read them. But occasionally, I'll see something fantastic on Twitter and want to join. Perhaps Assisted Homicide needs to tweet @Bad Horse.

I've really wanted waffles the last few days

The night before this was due I had a dream some old biddy accused me of not being a hardcore Whedon fan.

I don't read io9 as much as I really ought to. It is simply too much amazing for me to handle. I fear would never release me from its tentacle vortex of wonderful things. I was checking it out today because they mentioned the Evil League of Evil contest that recently closed and I stumbled upon this Lego Zombie diorama. But sometimes, it is just sad. Anyways, I'm in the library and should probably get to class pretty soon.

The Post That Refused to Die

If you still think zombies are funny you should imagine yourself wrapped in the cold embrace of a putrid ghoul about to devour your brains while your helpless family members look on in a hopeless agony.

Because today is Mother's Day, I spent an inordinate amount of time yesterday shopping for the perfect gift (3+ hours). This could be blamed, in part, on how she is difficult to shop for, but really, I just like to look at stuff. Perhaps I'm just a little naive or sheltered or whatever, but I am always amazed by the sheer diversity of consumer goods. Whoa, they make that? What is that for? Hey, look at that thing! No, that other thing! Oooh, that thing has numbers on it! I don't know why, but I find it highly enjoyable. Plus, I like to roll around on the smooth tile floors. I took some pictures of some of my favorite items for you, the reader! I'll upload these later with some snarky commentary.

I like shopping alone because I can go at my own leisurely pace and take all the detours I'd like without inconveniencing whomever with my impulsive erraticism. I also tend to wander off in stores and that can be a little awkward at times. But I don't really like attending events alone. In my experience events like the Faux Film Festival are enhanced by the presence of a peer. I can recall easily (perhaps painfully so) a time when I won tickets to the Dew Action Sports Tour for being a Glorious Bastard and could find absolutely no one* willing to take the second ticket. Although I try to spin this as a dislike of extreme sports coupled with the short notice I gave the invitation rather than evidence of some hidden and unsavory characteristic(s), I found myself in a similar situation last night (perhaps lending credibility to the later?). While I initially found this quite disturbing, it proved to be a boon as open seats were difficult to find, especially in the dark theater, a trouble which would have been multiplied by multiples (I was able to get an amazing seat during the BMX Park finals at AST because of this issue and a last minute seat at a Blue Man Group concert). I had also been very nervous as I don't usually hold up very well under tense situations or intensely dramatic moments (I stopped watching Desperate Housewives a few years ago to reduce my intrigue intake; also because my then-roommates thought it was too decadent for our sanctuary from sin or whatever). I'm both very jumpy and slightly ticklish; a poor combination (I'm using a lot of parenthetical remarks today) and it is my understanding that horror films are generally best viewed in the company of the fairer sex. So, yeah...

I've written a few times about my fascination with zombies, even writing a rather poor paper on the mythological nature of the undead for an English class (which received the comment "when will they rise???" on a peer review sheet). It is a morbid curiosity and, in actuality, I am rather terrified of zombies and what they represent. Terrified is the wrong word. If I were really concerned with apocalyptic preparedness, I'd have planned and prepared for a Stage 3 Outbreak by now (also probably the whole spirituality thing). Given my Mormon family's emphasis on food storage I think we could handle up to that point although we'd only have melee weapons at our disposal. I've pushed for a domestic firearm for disaster situations, but nothing yet. Maybe I'm more concerned about Z-day than I thought, or it's just a residual affect of scouting.

In any case, once I found out about Zompire, I had to go. Given that my prior experience with zombie film had been Shawn of the Dead, Fido, and the thirty second re-enactment, I wasn't sure what to expect. I know it should be more given how much I liked World War Z (a must read!) and everything, but I believe I've mentioned both the mild stigma I feel watching movies alone (supposing they can hold my attention long enough to finish) and that I'm kind of a huge baby, but not like that. I don't actively avoid watching movies alone, although it is always preferable with company, but I'm not sure I will ever be able to shake the image of my father watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants alone in his room when no one else would join him. It still strikes me as all sorts of weird (even after hearing him ask my mother if a certain pair of jeans "made his butt look fat") and remains a pinnacle of pitiful that sadly remains married to the thought of solo film delectation.

Anyways, I ended up going alone and I staved off my apprehension through compulsive text messaging. So-much-so that my mobile blog was flagged by a security feature meant to prevent blog spam and reduce server stress through use of a captcha, which I can't do from my phone. The timer has expired so I can once enjoy my mobile post masturbation (yay for text message post delivery confirmation!). Luckily, a majority of the short films were lighthearted, comedic, and even satirical. Did I mention weird? They were all weird. A couple were incredibly gripping, and most all were entertaining, though there were a few others which were trying hard to be something, with various levels of success. You can tell from some of the directors' comment on the festival's website how lofty a metaphor they think their zombies can stand, hobble, and moan for. Example:
Burying the Ex is a metaphor for a seemingly ever-present ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend and the baggage we must deal with when a relationship comes to an end. In Burying the Ex even the grave can't hold a jilted lover who's learned that their ex has found someone new...
That's not fair, because I kind of enjoyed that one (Danielle Harris is a very attractive woman) and it had the kid from Freaks and Geeks. These (figurative) zombies elicited more groans of horror than screams of fright, but that could not be said of the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, which I enjoyed, but Oh God, why are they running? Oh God, they aren't supposed to be running! Make them stop! Ahhh! For the record, I never actually screamed and no one can prove otherwise. My only regret, besides arriving slightly late, was that I was not able to watch the entirety of Wasting Away (stupid public transit schedules!) and it will be difficult to procure.

Anyways, that is why I did not sleep well last night. Also, I didn't get home until 2 am and then Liane Hansen woke me up at the ungodly hour of 6 am.

*That I wanted to hang out with.

Broadcast Journalism is Inferior to Print Media

Because I too am a huge nerd.

I'm watching the review of Iron Man on At the Movies which transitions nicely into Zetaman, Portland's real-life superhero who KATU recently did a piece on, however the Willamette Week did a much better job. According to the article, he's looking for form a super group; I already have a good portion of the outfit and we could probably carpool! Yay!

The Clothing Makes The Man

Although, I was really tempted to get this Green Lantern shirt.

The belt buckle debacle has gotten me thinking about the futility of life or something. What does it mean when a shoe commercial is correct? I am highly suspect of the study, and even more curious where I, an adultish male that wears the shoes of children, fit in this world of those who sneak and those who don't. Also, I can't help but wonder which sneakers the captains of industry are wearing with their suits.
"Casual, carefree, I don't take myself too seriously -- that's what I hope my shoes say about me," Kelley said.
Yeah, that's how I roll.

In any case, I've expressed interest in augmenting my vision with more utility. There are sunglasses with speakers, but they are prohibitively expensive. I had heard rumors of sunglasses with rear view mirrors, but I found nothing appropriate for everyday use. Perhaps I would have had more luck if I thought to search for more than mirror sunglasses. Thinking they might have something similar, or at least a name, I ventured to The Streets of Tanasbourne with a friend. They did not, although in fairness, we didn't really give The Sunglasses Hut a fair chance because they were obviously too cool for us. We were not too cool for Hot Topic and so we stepped in there for a moment. For a time, I felt really icky for owning a Snakes on a Plane shirt I purchased there whenever ago. For a niche retailer, they certainly cover a diverse set of interests. From Harry Potter trading cards and Halo 3 action figures to pink bustiers and Simpsons merch, I suppose a better question is what don't they try to sell? I imagine having merchandise at Hot Topic is one of the signs a band has sold out to some, when really, Hot Topic has just bought in.

Oh, and it turns out the sunglasses were here all along.

Amy Adams gives me stirrings in my utility belt

I just noticed a new story on In Character: Catwoman. Which includes this quote from the king of camp, Adam West, describing the actresses who have played the part, "They all gave me curious stirrings in my utility belt." Oh, Adam...

I can hear in the other room that Oprah is talking about erectile dysfunction and vasectomies, (and other urogenital health issues I assume). I'm not really that interested in finding out, although I wonder if the episode implies that Oprah has some silent male demographic, previously undiscovered, living in a remote jungle or someplace ever more exotic. They do call him Dr. Oz. I took some class, titled Media and the Presence of Reality or something similar; it was a philosophy class filled with idiots of the highest caliber. It was painful at times, although I found the day we talked about Oprah, and watched her on her dvd, unintentionally lulzy (which is the best kind). One of the essay topics for the final was on Oprah and about how whether talkshows like hers provide a vital public service or merely suppose to and the consequences such. When she talked about Middlesex, I can imagine that being in the best interest of the public, but then she interviews Hannah Montana? I cannot fault her; her format is widely successful and popular, although the testimonials on the dvd did her no service. One of which claimed that she had planned to kill herself until she saw that days episode of Oprah and changed her mind. This perhaps speaks more to the mental condition of this viewer (or all viewers?) than the power of the format and I further wonder why so late in the day? It's not over until like 5pm here. I instead chose to write about reality television in an essay of dubious quality. I do not doubt, having edited a cohort's work for a group project, that on the basis of grammar alone, that my paper will receive adequate marks. I've been informed that the audience in the episode which inspired this tangent is entirely male. More questions to ponder!

I was going to write something about how Enchanted may have broken my families Eckhart spree. I never should have told them that he was Mormon. They seemed more skeptical when I shared similar knowledge of Julianne Hough. She doesn't dress like it! They retorted. Of course, this paragraph wouldn't be complete without mentioning that Amy Adams was, and so was Katherine Heigl, but these things don't mean anything. Except that I'll have a good ice-breaker should I ever met Amy Adams or Ryan Gosling.

The Best Kind of Rampage

I've always been partial to this kind of rampage, but naked rampages are definitely up there. The video has some of the best visual gags, I guess you'd call them, of any news report I've ever seen. I also happened upon this seemingly unrelated article on wikipedia that caught my interest, probably because I'm a huge nerd.

Companions, anyone?

Companions, anyone? I always like to start with a picture.

I was awoken in the worst way. I hope it doesn't linger. Although I should probably be thankful, I can't imagine much else that would have roused me other than the rush to turn off the radio. Alas, I was not fast enough.

That wasn't the first thing to wake me up, really. I found this story very interesting, especially considering I'd just just done a horrible presentation on Mount Erebus. They aren't at McMurdo though. Although their story has a mistake:

The South Pole lies ahead — a simple metal pole stuck in the snow. It marks the exact location of the bottom of the world, 90 degrees latitude. (Actually this pole has to move about 30 feet every year because the entire Antarctic continent floats.)
The pole doesn't actually move. I mean, the axis does wobble, but it still remains the axis. And I'm pretty certain they aren't talking about the magnetic pole or anything. What they are referring to is that the glaciers move, and the bases are built upon them, because you aren't going to go through a mile of ice to build a base that would be crushed by all the ice around it. I'm not sure that's clear. The continent of Antarctica does not float, it moves in accordance to the theory of plate tectonics (which is significantly less than 30 feet), but the ice above it does. Anyways, still interesting.

I then watched Legion of Superheroes and the Spectacular Spider-man, which I've decided can only end badly.

The Merc with a Mouth has a pretty face too

Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. That kicks so much ass. Wade Wilson isn't supposed to be a very pretty person after he receives his healing factor; the mask hides hideous scarring and whatnot, but Reynolds has the mouth for the part. I doubt he'll break the fourth wall in the film, but I would be elated if he did. I like to describe Deadpool as a mix of the wit of Peter Parker and superpowers of Logan, but really, he's ninja spider-man. I haven't been following this that closely as I wasn't crazy about the X-Men Trilogy. It was alright, but it didn't really compare to the Spider-man series. I feel this film may have some redeeming potential, since it will include Gambit. In addition to the Wolverine origin film, they have one about Magneto in production, but it doesn't have it's own Wikipedia article yet.

Also, they cast Martian Manhunter for the Justice League movie, but that's not as cool. If that movie is a success, we can probably expect one about the Teen Titans 2 years later. Then maybe Legion of Superheroes, but probably not.

Press Y to Dual Wield

Think geek just added these toys. You can apparently play laser tag with them, although the laser sounds sound nothing like the plasma sounds from the games, although they are probably the most realistic Halo accessory you can find outside of eBay auctions. The laser-tag aspect seems like an after thought almost. The receiver is a tiny belt buckle, which from experience with other laser tag systems (when i was little!) is that those are easy to hide or otherwise obscure to cheat, but with the price tag these have, I doubt many children were playing. My family used to have 6 lasertag guns that also the sensors on the gun to avoid this problem. The beams also bounced off walls, which was weird. I think Ethan has destroyed pretty much all of them by now. Laser tag was/is fun.

I'm way more likely to buy one of these though. This, though I am a little tempted, I could never buy because, as my sister says, would get me "gang raped." Though I wonder, do they contain UV protection?

There will be justice

When I first learned they were making this movie, I was kind of excited. Now, it's more...ehh... I wouldn't have minded if the writer's strike had killed it. All the actors are relative unknowns, which makes forecasting expectations difficult, but I feel confident saying that I don't like Adam Brody as The Flash. Also, they have a Batman franchise so why aren't they using Christian Bale in it? Maybe they won't get past preproduction..

Bad-ass Legos

This is pretty awesome. I am thinking of busting out my old Lego collection and building a personal army of this guy's stuff. It's a lot cooler than that Exo-Force stuff Lego has been making, which is arguably still kind of cool.

Delicious Heartache

This pair of shirts is pretty adorable in the geekiest way imaginable. It's much better than this one my old roommate Rick bought. I am in much more of a situation to buy these. And these Adult Madlibs just sound enjoyable, as all Madlibs are. I never imagined there was a need for adult Madlibs because you could just use more sophisticated words, although I haven't played Madlibs since age 10 in Ms. Russo's class, so maybe I'm wrong...

Valentines

If I wasn't so alone, I would totally get these. Hell, I'm tempted even with no one to give them too.

And this product gives me more questions than answers.

It's called as Spiderman Mold Candle. I don't know what that is, well, that apparently. It is a molded candle or a mold for a candle? I am intrigued because I love to play with candles. I wonder if it has spider scents...

Teen Titans Lost Annual

I just got this in the mail and am pretty pumped, despite all the bad things that have happened today. It has a SHOCKING PRESIDENTIAL GUEST-STAR!

Protip: It's JFK!

Oh, I, err, uhh, am pumped.
